Kulasai, during Dussehra. The fire is hers. Everything around her dissolves into smoke and shadow. Only the flame holds still. She carries it in both hands, a crown on her head, marigolds and jasmine heavy on her chest, her face painted dark as the night itself. Her eyes look past me, past the crowd, toward something only she can see. I raised my camera for a second, maybe less. But in that second I understood that I wasn’t photographing a performance. In Kulasai, devotees take on the form of the goddess after weeks of fasting and vows. When they step into the street, they are no longer themselves. They are her. The fire burns. The night listens.
