Ash & Awe
Kulasai, during Dussehra. The smallest one carries the most. He is hardly taller than the drums that wake the street, yet he stands there covered in ash from head to toe, rudraksha wound around his head, his arms, his chest. A single folded ten-rupee note hangs against his heart, an offering given by strangers who believe a child dressed as a god is closer to heaven than they are. I was looking down at him through my lens. He was looking up at me like he was the one holding the camera, calm and unafraid, with eyes much older than his years. Some festivals are watched. In Kulasai, they are lived, even by the youngest. Even a child can be a god for one night. Captured at the Kulasai Dussehra Festival, Tamil Nadu.
