Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe Beneath the Great Wave
A playful reinterpretation of The Great Wave off Kanagawa (c. 1831), the iconic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai from the late Edo period. In this version, Pepe the Frog stands in a small boat, calmly navigating the monumental cresting wave that once threatened the fishermen of the original composition. Mount Fuji remains in the distance, anchoring the scene in its historical landscape.
The work preserves Hokusai’s dynamic composition, the indigo palette, and the tense dialogue between human fragility and the overwhelming power of nature, while introducing a humorous contemporary presence that subtly shifts the emotional register from existential dread to quiet, surreal resilience.
