Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe in the Season of Layers
This work reinterprets the bijin-ga genre of Edo-period ukiyo-e, especially the traditional “Beauties of the Four Seasons.” The figure, modelled after the refined courtesans and geisha portrayed by masters such as Kitagawa Utamaro and Tōshūsai Sharaku, is transformed through the visual grammar of Pephistory.
The maple-leaf kimono signals autumn, a season celebrated in Japanese art for its gentle melancholy and sense of impermanence. The soft linework, muted palette, and washi-textured background evoke late Edo-period woodblock printing (18th–19th century), maintaining the compositional poise typical of female portraiture of the era.
