Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe at Twilight Before Mount Fuji
Inspired by the atmospheric twilight views of Mount Fuji from the late Edo period, this work reinterprets the poetic sensibility of artists such as Katsushika Hokusai and his depictions of the sacred mountain in shifting light. The warm orange sky fading into deep indigo recalls the chromatic gradients of Fugaku Sanjūrokkei (Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji), particularly the serene evening scenes where Fuji becomes a silent axis between nature, spirituality, and daily life.
Here, Pepe stands in contemplative stillness along the lakeshore, wrapped in a traditional garment, embodying the quiet introspection typical of Edo-period landscape prints. His wide, reflective gaze transforms the iconic mountain into an emotional mirror, bridging ukiyo-e aesthetics with contemporary digital iconography. The result is a meditation on time, solitude, and the enduring cultural aura of Fuji.
