Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe, The Courtesan’s Letter
A reinterpretation of Courtesan Writing a Letter by Kitagawa Utamaro, one of the most distinctive icons of late-18th-century Edo-period Ukiyo-e (c. 1790–1800).
Pepe embodies an oiran absorbed in the act of writing, surrounded by the silent ritual of gesture and ink. The work remains faithful to Utamaro’s elegance: the slender profile, the delicately patterned kimono, the calligraphy flowing like an intimate thought.
In the figure’s contemplative expression lies the essence of the “floating world”: fragile desires, fleeting memories, and emotions suspended in time. Here, Pepe becomes a subtle bridge between contemporary wit and the original’s quiet lyrical introspection.
