This work reinterprets the refined elegance of Edo-period maki-e lacquerware, a craft celebrated for its meticulous application of gold powder onto deep black lacquer surfaces. At the center sits Pepe in a kneeling pose, dressed in a traditional kimono and partially hiding behind a folding fan, an echo of classical courtly modesty and poetic introspection. Surrounding him, seasonal motifs bloom in radiant gold: delicate plum blossoms symbolizing renewal, chrysanthemums evoking longevity and imperial grace, and sprigs of maple hinting at the quiet melancholy of autumn. The composition balances restraint and ornamentation, capturing the Japanese aesthetic principles of yūgen and miyabi. The result is an homage to both artisanal craftsmanship and contemporary visual culture, merging humorous iconography with the solemn beauty of traditional lacquer artistry.
