Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe Among Irises
This work reimagines the iconic Irises screens by Ogata Kōrin, a masterpiece of the Rinpa school known for its bold simplification of form, rhythmic repetition, and luminous gold backgrounds. In this playful reinterpretation, a solitary iris on the far right reveals the face of Pepe, seamlessly integrated into the stylized petals. The composition maintains the Rinpa emphasis on flat planes, saturated color, and decorative elegance, while the inserted character subverts the classical harmony with a humorous, contemporary twist.
The result is a dialogue between tradition and meme culture: an Edo-period visual grammar infused with a modern symbol of digital folklore, blending refinement and irony without disturbing the serene cadence of the original pattern.
