Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe by the Riverside Pavilion
This work emulates the refined elegance of Edo-period maki-e lacquerware, where gold powder is used to draw delicate landscapes on dark lacquer surfaces. At the center, Pepe sits peacefully by a winding riverside, surrounded by tall grasses and the shade of an ancient pine whose stylized branches echo classical Rinpa-school compositions. Across the water stands a small lakeside pavilion, evoking the poetic settings of Japanese literati painting. The scene blends humor and serenity, inserting the contemporary Pepe figure into a timeless, contemplative landscape, as though he were a quiet observer within a golden dream of Edo Japan.
