Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
The Three Beauties of Edo
A Pephistory reinterpretation of Kitagawa Utamaro’s iconic print “The Three Beauties of Edo,” one of the masterpieces of late-18th-century ukiyo-e.
The original depicted three legendary beauties of the capital, Tomimoto Toyohina, Naniwa Kita, and Takashima Hisa, captured in a composition of subtle elegance and harmonious proportions.
In this reimagining, the figures adopt expressive Pepe visages, preserving Utamaro’s refined silhouettes and kimono arrangements while adding a contemporary, psychological twist. The delicate linework, soft washi-paper texture, and bijin-ga aesthetic remain intact, allowing the meme’s ironic presence to coexist with historical fidelity.
The work becomes a dialogue between tradition and digital culture, merging Edo-period refinement with 21st-century visual language
