Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe in Kintsugi Contemplation
This work reimagines the Japanese art of kintsugi, the centuries-old practice of repairing broken ceramics with lacquer dusted in gold, transforming damage into a philosophy of resilience and beauty. Here, Pepe is rendered as a weathered ceramic figure, its surface textured like fired clay, its fractures illuminated by delicate golden seams. The pose recalls traditional seated figurines of the Edo period, evoking introspection and quiet dignity. By merging kintsugi aesthetics with a contemporary icon, the piece reflects on impermanence, continuity, and the idea that identity is shaped not in spite of our fractures, but through them.
