Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe Among the Irises
Inspired by Ogata Kōrin’s iconic “Irises” folding screens (circa 1701–1705), this work reimagines the Rinpa master’s radical decorative minimalism through the lens of Pephistory. The scene preserves Kōrin’s unmistakable gold-leaf ground and his rhythmic alternation of indigo petals and sharp green blades, creating a flat yet immersive field of pattern and repetition.
Here, however, a solitary Pepe figure dressed in Edo-period attire wanders through the towering stands of irises. His small, contemplative presence introduces narrative where Kōrin sought pure design, transforming the classical seasonal motif into a quiet journey of introspection. The contrast between the monumental florals and Pepe’s humble scale echoes the Rinpa school’s interest in poetic suggestion, while adding a gently humorous, contemporary twist that bridges centuries of visual culture.
