Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe Slays the Mountain Oni
Inspired by Kuniyoshi’s celebrated musha-e (warrior prints), this work reimagines the dramatic confrontations between legendary heroes and fearsome oni. Pepe, cast in the role of a stalwart samurai, raises his blade in a dynamic overhead strike, the classic kirioroshi pose favored by Kuniyoshi for its explosive energy. The oni, rendered with bulging eyes, flared nostrils, and a tiger-skin loincloth, mirrors the ferocity of the demons found in Kuniyoshi’s depictions of Shuten-dōji and other monstrous foes. Billowing ink-dark clouds fill the background, echoing the swirling atmospheric effects typical of Edo-period woodblock prints.
This reinterpretation merges humor and heroism, placing Pepe within the grand theatrical vocabulary of ukiyo-e battle scenes while remaining faithful to the visual grammar of the original era.
