Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe Among the Hungry Ghosts
This work reimagines the grotesque spirit sketches attributed to Katsushika Hokusai, where emaciated gaki, “hungry ghosts” condemned to eternal craving, surround a central figure. Here, the traditional specters are faithfully rendered with the same frail limbs, hollow eyes, and distorted mouths that characterize Edo-period yōkai iconography. At the center sits Pepe, calm and almost amused, embodying a serene intrusion into a realm of torment. His rounded silhouette and expressionless gaze create a humorous yet uncanny contrast with the shrieking apparitions orbiting him. The piece blends classical yōkai draftsmanship with contemporary meme iconography, maintaining the ink-on-paper austerity typical of late-Edo supernatural studies while transforming the scene into a playful parody of fear and detachment.
