Inspired by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi’s visionary approach to kaidan imagery, this work reinterprets the legendary tale of Kiyohime, the woman consumed by unrequited love who transforms into a serpent. Here, the monstrous elegance of her elongated coils and anguished, distorted face is rendered in a style reminiscent of Yoshitoshi’s late woodblock prints, where psychological tension and supernatural terror merge into a single, haunting tableau. Pepe, depicted as a calm samurai holding a sake cup, introduces a playful counterpoint to the dramatic scene. His poised demeanor contrasts sharply with Kiyohime’s feverish metamorphosis, underscoring themes of obsession, restraint, and the tragic extremes of emotion that define much of Meiji-era ghost lore. The muted pigments, misty background, and tactile grain of the paper echo the atmospheric depth of Yoshitoshi’s ukiyo-e mastery, situating the piece firmly within the twilight shift between Edo superstition and Meiji modernity.
