This work reimagines the legendary Ghost of Oiwa, one of Japan’s most iconic yūrei, from the Edo-period theatrical tradition and the later prints of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. Here, the spectral figure is recast as Pepe, whose drooping expression amplifies Oiwa’s sorrow and tragic fate. The tattered shōji panels, emaciated posture, and limp, blackened hair recall the classical visual grammar used to depict onryō, vengeful spirits whose suffering binds them to the mortal world. By merging meme iconography with Yoshitoshi’s eerie atmospheres, the piece transforms a foundational kaidan tale into a contemporary hybrid: humorous yet unsettling, rooted in folklore yet reframed through digital-age mythology.
