Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe as Yurei in the Style of Utagawa Toyokuni
This work reimagines a classic yūrei-e (ghost picture) through the visual vocabulary of Utagawa Toyokuni, known for his dynamic kabuki actor portraits. Here, Pepe embodies the archetypal Japanese ghost: long unkempt hair, hollow gaze, and the flowing ikatabira funeral robe, rendered with the elegant linework and soft gradations typical of Edo-period ukiyo-e. The background temple architecture, lightly washed in sepia tones, evokes the atmospheric stage sets of kabuki ghost plays (kaidan mono), where spectral women drift between worlds. By merging Toyokuni’s theatrical expressiveness with contemporary iconography, the piece creates a playful yet reverent homage to the ukiyo-e tradition of supernatural storytelling.
