Inspired by the iconic portrait of Ichikawa Ebizō IV created by Tōshūsai Sharaku in 1794, during the Edo period, this reinterpretation transforms the kabuki master into an amphibious figure while preserving the psychological tension of the original. The contracted hand, the arched brow, the suspended theatrical gesture, everything echoes the expressive intensity that made Sharaku so mysterious and innovative, able to capture the emotions concealed behind the actor’s mask. Here, Pepe’s face is not a caricature but an alter ego that amplifies that same dramatic unease, transporting ukiyo-e into a meta-historical terrain. The kimono, adorned with geometric patterns and family crests, remains faithful to the details of the era, while the print’s texture recalls hosho paper and the earthy pigments typical of Edo-period palettes. A respectful yet ironic homage to one of the most enigmatic portraits in the history of ukiyo-e.
