Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe Confronting the Gashadokuro
This work reinterprets the iconic supernatural scenes of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, particularly his depictions of giant skeleton spirits such as the Gashadokuro in the tale of Princess Takiyasha. Here, Pepe assumes the role of the lone samurai facing an overwhelming yokai apparition. The colossal skeleton, rendered with bold outlines, muted earthy tones, and dramatic chiaroscuro typical of late Edo ukiyo-e, looms over the hero with a mixture of menace and grandeur. The broken planks and scattered skulls evoke the turbulent narrative settings used by Kuniyoshi to merge folklore, danger, and heroism.
This reinterpretation maintains the theatrical dynamism and supernatural tension of Kuniyoshi’s prints while translating the scene into the Pephistory visual lexicon.
