This work reimagines the legendary encounter between a warrior and Tamamo-no-Mae, the mythical nine-tailed fox spirit who appears throughout Japanese folklore and was famously depicted by Utagawa Kuniyoshi in the Edo period. Here, the samurai figure is transformed into a solemn Pepe-warrior, dressed in traditional ō-yoroi armor and conical jingasa hat, evoking the dramatic woodblock style of late Edo ukiyo-e. Tamamo-no-Mae is portrayed with elegant restraint: a noblewoman seated in a richly patterned kimono, her fox ears and the fan of nine ethereal tails emerging behind her. The composition follows classical ukiyo-e conventions, flattened perspective, delicate linework, muted mineral-like colors, while the aged parchment texture echoes the hand-printed feel of historical prints. The scene captures the tension between seduction and danger central to Tamamo-no-Mae’s myth: the ambiguous moment before revelation, where beauty, deception, and destiny converge. Through the Pepe persona, the work bridges folklore and digital culture, merging the heroic gravitas of Kuniyoshi with contemporary iconography in a way that remains faithful to the spirit of Edo narrative prints.
