Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe Assisting in the Beheading of Shuten-doji
This work reimagines Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s iconic depiction of the beheading of Shuten-dōji, one of the most dramatic scenes in Edo-period warrior prints. In the original, the heroes of the Minamoto clan decapitate the fearsome oni who had terrorized Kyoto. Here, Pepe appears among the armored samurai, seamlessly integrated into the composition through faithfully rendered textile patterns, armor details, and the tense choreography of the slaying. The dynamic diagonals of the blades, the contorted expression of the demon, and the compressed spatial setting all echo Kuniyoshi’s signature style, defined by muscular bodies, intense storytelling, and bold linework.
This reinterpretation preserves the theatrical violence and heroic narrative of late Edo ukiyo-e while introducing a playful contemporary icon, creating a striking dialogue between mythic lore and modern digital culture.
