#18 − Computer Cowgirls (Molly Dickson)
Exhibition Poster #18 − Computer Cowgirls (Molly Dickson)
Artist: Molly Dickson
Collection: Computer Cowgirls
Object: Selected Works
Date: November 2022
Computer Cowgirls is composed of 201 digital collages, each animated by hand by the artist.
The work is not generatively produced – Dickson individually assembled and collage animated each figure, drawing on her practice at the intersection of photography and collage.
Each cowgirl ‘shimmys’ her way down a campy rhinestone road.
The work is unapologetically female in its aesthetic. Indeed, it is as much unserious as it is serious, skillful as it is improvisational - defining features of Dickson’s oeuvre.
The collection originated as a response to the restrictive abortion legislation passed in Texas in early 2022. The cowgirl, a figure of American mythology and feminine self-possession, is repurposed here as a vehicle for dissent.
100% of the collection's proceeds went directly to abortion funds in Texas. Dickson and her team went on to raise nearly six figures for abortion access through her future art collections, leading the charge for other crypto art projects to use blockchains as a mechanism for charitable donations and political change.
