Exhibition Poster #17 − Moments of the Unknown (Justin Aversano) Artist: Justin Aversano Collection: Moments of the Unknown Object: Selected Works Date: October 2025 Over the course of a single year, artist Justin Aversano travelled across seven continents to produce a continuous portrait of contemporary human presence. Each day yielded a ten-second moving image: a child, an elder, a family, a stranger. None were scouted or arranged. The gathering of these brief encounters forms a meditation on time and the unscripted nature of human connection. The work draws its sonic architecture from the Voyager Golden Record, the 1977 NASA artifact assembled under Carl Sagan's direction to represent Earth to unknown recipients in interstellar space. Aversano repurposes these sounds as connective tissue between continents, folding a message once sent outward back onto its source. The subjects of Moments of the Unknown are not chosen – they are met. Its duration is not edited but lived. What emerges is less a catalogue of difference than an argument for continuity. A year rendered as a single, extended gaze.
