Impressions from Japan
Zen Rocks
This work is inspired by the Zen rock garden at Ryoan-ji, nestled in northwestern Kyoto. Zen rock gardens are among the most serene spaces I encountered in Japan, embodying stillness through restraint and intentional emptiness.
The painting captures the essence of this minimal landscape, its balance, silence, and quiet rhythm—translated into a biomorphic, impressionistic form. Created on site, the work freezes a fleeting moment of contemplation, not as a literal depiction, but as an emotional and sensory impression.
Another painting from this same location, minted within this collection as Tsukubai, reflects a neighboring element just beyond the rock garden. Together, the works echo the tranquil atmosphere of the temple grounds, a place where silence is encouraged and presence becomes the experience itself.
