Brushed Wild
The Bugle of Autumn
He stands in a meadow,
Crowned in tines,
Chest deep in morning mist.
The air is sharp with the musk of rut,
Autumn’s hues beneath wary hooves.
He lets out a warning call,
Rising into the early morning skies.
Bulls nearby shy away,
Cows drift behind him,
Calves move away,
But his eyes scan the ridge.
A challenger may still come.
