Il Bacio di Pepe
Francesco Hayez’s Il Bacio is one of the most iconic paintings of Italian Romanticism and the Risorgimento. More than a scene of passion, it embodies political allegory: a clandestine farewell or a secret pact, painted at a time when Italy was struggling toward unification. Draped in theatrical chiaroscuro, the lovers’ embrace becomes a symbol of love intertwined with sacrifice, intimacy charged with patriotic meaning. The tender gesture of the kiss thus resonates beyond romance, speaking to an entire nation’s longing for freedom. The work recalls Hayez’s oil technique with polished surfaces, velvety textures, and warm tonalities. The man’s resolute posture and the woman’s yielding grace are staged in luminous contrast against a shadowed background. In this parody version, Pepe replaces the lovers, humorously distorting the solemn aura of Romantic pathos while preserving its theatrical composition and emotional charge.
