Splendor of the Baroque Pepe

The Roman Baroque was not only painting and sculpture, but a total art of splendor. Gilded stuccoes, illusionistic frescoes, and soaring trompe-l’œil ceilings dissolved architecture into radiant visions. Churches became theaters of faith, designed to overwhelm the senses with light, color, and movement, immersing the faithful in a spectacle where heaven itself seemed to descend upon stone. This was an art of astonishment, where devotion and wonder converged in dazzling display. The work recalls the swirling frescoes and gilded reliefs of Baroque interiors, with radiant gold, celestial figures, and architecture dissolving into infinite space. Amid angels and stucco, Pepe hovers playfully, a comic intruder who both disrupts and extends the splendor of Rome’s heavenly theater.
