San Pepe
The mosaics of Ravenna stand as some of the highest achievements of Byzantine art in the West. Spread across apses and walls, they transfigured church interiors into celestial realms: saints, martyrs, and emperors appeared in frontal solemnity, set against golden fields that evoked eternity and divine order. In an age marked by political fragmentation, these luminous images embodied the authority of the Christian Church and its promise of salvation. This work recalls the opus tessellatum technique: tiny glass tesserae shimmering in shifting light, strict frontal symmetry, and hieratic stillness. Pepe, reconstructed in mosaic, provides a humorous counterpoint, breaking the solemn cadence of the celestial assembly while preserving its radiant architecture.
