Long before the village was built beside the lake,
the elders had one rule:
Never look into the water after midnight.
They said the lake remembered everyone
who had ever looked back at it.
One autumn night,
a girl disappeared near its shore.
They searched until sunrise.
They found nothing but a few white flowers
floating where she had stood.
Years passed.
Then, one moonless night,
the lake became perfectly still.
A woman rose slowly from beneath the water.
Her eyes were open.
Her hair drifted across the surface.
And beside her,
a black serpent circled silently.
The villagers watched from the trees.
Then the woman whispered a name.
Her own.
But that was impossible.
She had never told anyone her name.
And the oldest villager suddenly understoodโ
the lake hadn't brought her back.
It had been waiting for her to return.
