He is still a child.
He should be playing somewhere safe, running around his home, getting his clothes dirty, and worrying about things that children are supposed to worry about. Instead, he is sitting among the ruins of what used to be someone's home, holding a teddy bear and raising his hand like nothing has happened.
There is something painful about seeing a child smile in a place like this. Not because his smile is wrong, but because he should never have had to learn how to smile through this much destruction.
Palestinian children deserve more than survival.
They deserve a home.
They deserve safety.
They deserve to grow up without knowing what the sound of a bomb means.
And yet, here he is.
Still smiling.
Still standing.
Still Palestinian.
