In 1856, chemist William Henry Perkin accidentally invented the first synthetic dye, aniline purple or mauveine, while trying to synthesize quinine. However, the production of aniline dyes led to considerable environmental issues, as untreated chemical waste was often discharged into water sources, resulting in pollution and health risks for nearby communities.
