1914 Empress of Ireland Disaster

The Empress of Ireland was a passenger ship that sank in the Saint Lawrence River on May 29, 1914, after colliding with the Norwegian collier Storstad. Departing Quebec City en route to Liverpool, the larger liner, similar in size to the RMS Titanic, carried over 1,400 passengers and crew. The collision occurred in fog, leading to the rapid submersion of the ship and a significant loss of life. The subsequent investigation criticized inadequate navigation practices and maritime safety protocols, marking it as one of Canada's deadliest maritime tragedies.
