Rays of sunlight highlighted her face, wrapped in a black veil. As we stopped to ask for directions while crossing the southern Adrar toward Ksar el Barka, I asked to take her photo, captivated by the play of shadows and light. Only her eyes were visible, narrowing slightly, perhaps in a smile, perhaps in surprise, or simply trying to understand the strange device in my hands.
