Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe, Bronze Saint of the Meme Cosmos
In this illustration, Pepe takes on the role of the young warrior protagonist in a clear homage to Saint Seiya by Masami Kurumada. The celestial armor, rendered with metallic tones and airbrushed volume, echoes the signature style of 1980s manga covers, while the fighting stance directly recalls the promotional posters of the original anime series. In the background, hand-drawn constellations and Athenian architecture evoke the classical mythology reinterpreted by the original manga.
Here, however, myth blends with meme culture: Pepe is not just a Saint, but a contemporary archetype, the “Bronze Saint” of a digital cosmos where irony and nostalgia coexist. The result is a perfect hybrid between vintage shōnen aesthetics and internet iconography, transforming the heroic rhetoric of the ’80s into a playful and postmodern visual language.
