This work reimagines a classic ukiyo-e depiction of kappa, the mischievous water yōkai prominent in Edo-period folklore. Traditionally shown with dish-like cavities on their heads and amphibious bodies, kappa were feared and respected as spirits dwelling in rivers and ponds. Here, Pepe seamlessly inhabits the role of a friendly yet enigmatic kappa, surrounded by three more feral counterparts whose exaggerated expressions and clawed hands recall the dramatic style of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, famed for his vivid yōkai illustrations. The swirling water patterns and muted pigments evoke the hand-printed textures of late Edo woodblock prints, while the humorous serenity of Pepe creates a playful contrast within an otherwise chaotic supernatural scene. The result is a hybrid homage that blends folklore, historical visual grammar, and contemporary iconography.
