Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe in a Sudden Shower over Ohashi Bridge
This playful reinterpretation of Hiroshige’s iconic rain scene transforms the frantic figures crossing Ōhashi Bridge into a chorus of startled Pepes caught in a violent downpour. Preserving the deep indigo atmosphere, the slanted golden rain lines, and the wooden structure of the bridge, the work maintains the dramatic tension and dynamic movement of the original ukiyo-e print. The Pepes, wide-eyed, drenched, and scrambling for shelter, offer a humorous yet faithful homage to Hiroshige’s masterful depiction of sudden weather and human vulnerability. The result is a fusion of Edo-period visual poetry and contemporary meme iconography, united under the unmistakable mood of a storm sweeping across the Sumida River.
