Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe at the Sumida River Hanami
This work reimagines a classic Edo-period hanami scene along the Sumida River, where families and passersby gather under the full bloom of cherry trees. Inspired by the visual language of ukiyo-e masters such as Hiroshige, the composition blends soft pink sakura, strolling figures in traditional kimono, and the calm flow of the river beyond. At the foreground, Pepe appears in contemplative pose, seamlessly integrated into the woodblock aesthetic. His presence adds an ironic yet poetic twist, turning the timeless ritual of flower-viewing into a moment of introspective stillness—an encounter between contemporary internet iconography and the fleeting beauty celebrated in Edo art.
