"The world permits no fame of them to remain." Dante, Inferno, Canto III Corrupta (Latin): corrupted, spoiled, broken, defiled. Feminine. The condemned one. A face condemned twice. Once as the subject, classified and marked, and once as the file itself, dragged and dissolved until the image can no longer hold its own form. This is damnatio memoriae rendered in digital decay: the Roman sentence of erasure, the striking of a face from every monument, carried out on a moving image until only the trace of a person remains. The corruption of the file and the corruption of the record are the same act. What survives the glitch is what survived the burn and the black bar in the works before it: a fragment, an eye-flash, the ghost of a stamp, enough to prove that something specific was here and was made to come apart. The world permits no memory of them to remain. — Dante, Inferno, Canto III
