Four Elements, Wind
Four Elements, Wind
Composed from the paintings : Desert, Joy, Wind, Peace
Wind is the breath of the world, and joy is the breath of a life. On this cube they are the same thing.
It comes from nowhere and asks permission from no one. One moment the air is flat and ordinary; the next, something warm is pouring past, catching the light, and you are lighter than you were. Joy is exactly this: it lands without warning, lifts what it touches, and is already leaving by the time you notice it came.
But moving air is invisible until it meets something that holds still. A canvas is one such place: where my brush gave the wind a moment to rest. The desert is another: the wide, quiet, waiting places, the parts of us swept clean and left alone. The wind needs them. It runs out across all that emptiness and turns it gold, and the bareness that looked like nothing becomes the very thing the joy gets to move through.
And after, always after, the air goes soft and stops, and that settling is peace. Not the absence of the wind, but the warmth it leaves in the room once it has gone.
The cube flows and the wind takes a way across it that the air has never traced before, then lifts and goes looking for another. You cannot catch it. You can only be standing in the open, face to the weather, when it decides to come through, and it never comes through the same way again.
