KEKH BU
Kekh Bu is a folkloric bird from the traditions of Gilan in northern Iran. In a local tale, a newlywed
woman is milking a cow while under the watch of her harsh father in law. When he accuses her of
taking some of the milk, she explains that the milk only appeared greater because it was covered with
foam. Heartbroken by his accusation, she wishes to become a bird and escape from his house. Her
wish is granted, and from then on she is said to fly from place to place calling “Kekh Bu,” preserving
the story of her injustice in the sound of a bird.
