Thresholds and gates: control normalised through design A threshold is built to allow vision without access. The iron lattice permits a clear view of the landscape beyond while denying passage. Sight and movement are separated by design. 
The worn wood carries the marks of time and repeated contact, suggesting that this barrier has been negotiated often, if never crossed. Control is quiet and habitual. There is no warning sign, no authority figure: only material design doing its work. 
The threshold does not confront; it conditions. It defines participation by geometry and placement, transforming openness into something symbolic rather than usable.
