EVERYONE TOOK A PIECE OF ME
Nobody ever asked me for everything.
That's what makes it so difficult to explain.
They only asked for a little.
A little more patience.
A little more forgiveness.
A little more understanding.
A little more of my time.
And every time, I gave it.
Because I thought that's what loving someone meant.
I thought love was measured by how much of yourself you were willing to sacrifice.
So I gave people my peace when they needed comfort.
My voice when they needed someone to agree.
My strength when they were falling apart.
My dreams when theirs seemed more important.
My forgiveness before they even apologized.
And pieces of my heart to people who never understood what it cost me to give them away.
At first, I barely noticed what was missing.
A small piece here.
Another there.
I told myself I would recover.
That one day, someone would love me the way I loved everyone else.
That someone would notice the empty spaces and ask who had taken so much.
But nobody did.
They only saw what I still had to offer.
They never looked at what was gone.
And I became so good at giving that people forgot I was someone who needed things too.
I forgot how to say no.
I forgot what made me happy.
I forgot what I wanted before I became everything everyone else needed.
Until one day, I looked at myself and realized that almost nothing remained.
And the strangest part?
I wasn't angry.
I still loved them.
I still wanted to protect them.
I still worried about disappointing them.
Even after everything, I found myself holding out the very last piece of who I was.
Hoping that this time, it would finally be enough.
But there is something heartbreaking about a person who has spent their entire life giving.
They begin to believe that being loved and being needed are the same thing.
They mistake exhaustion for devotion.
They mistake self-abandonment for kindness.
And they keep offering pieces of themselves, even when there is nothing left to replace them.
Maybe one day I'll learn that love isn't supposed to leave me empty.
That I can care without disappearing.
That I am allowed to keep something for myself.
But today, I am still sitting here.
Holding a heart full of empty places.
With one final piece resting in my hand.
**Everyone took a piece of me.**
**And I kept offering the rest.**
