They exist first as images: fragments gathered from books, photographs, paintings, stories, from the accumulated memory of a culture. With time, the image can become almost indistinguishable from the place itself. What was never experienced begins to feel remembered. Borrowed Light begins here. The seven works in the exhibition form an imagined landscape of Japan: a torii, a garden, a swan, wildflowers by a lake, the distant presence of Mount Fuji. Each is recognizable, yet none belongs to a single moment or a specific encounter. They inhabit the space between what is known and what is imagined. For SigmaX, this distance is not a limitation but a creative condition. His practice has always been grounded in a personal way of seeing. As an artist and architect, he approaches space through light, structure, proportion and atmosphere, transforming familiar forms into images that are at once precise and contemplative. In Borrowed Light, that personal language encounters an imagery that comes from elsewhere. Japan becomes a landscape of the imagination. The works move through a visual memory shaped in part by the Japanese Ukiyo-e tradition: fleeting moments, quiet observation, the simplicity of nature and everyday life, the feeling of a world briefly held still. Yet these elements are not treated as reproductions. They are absorbed, displaced and returned through anther sensibility. Something changes in the passage. The borrowed image is no longer quite the image that was received. This is the quiet tension at the heart of the exhibition. The farther an image moves from personal experience, the more space it leaves for imagination, a space where memory, desire and perception converge, and where what is imagined begins to reveal something about the one who imagined it. The light has travelled a long way to arrive here. It is borrowed. But it is no longer the same. What we borrow, we do not copy. We illuminate differently.
