One Hundred Frames

Transient Curated is pleased to present One Hundred Frames, a series of one hundred animated works by Samanta. Each piece returns to the same basic image: an ocean view seen through a frame, waves breaking at the bottom edge, clouds moving across the sky above, but within this framework, a variety of worlds emerge.

Samanta has spent months studying ocean waves closely. They are a staple throughout her work. The works are built from a narrow palette of blues set against a cream ground, reminiscent of woodblock prints or lithographs. Individual elements like water or clouds move slowly while maintaining the image as a whole.

Across the hundred pieces, the ocean and sky stay largely constant; what changes is the frame. It appears as plain wood grain in some works, worn or waterlogged in others, and at times opens into a dock, a ledge, or a set of steps inviting the viewer down to the water. Samanta has said she doesn't expect every viewer to respond to the same frame, and that she'd rather each person find the one that feels like it belongs to them. The depth of variety across each frame, combined with the universal backdrop of the ocean, make that experience flow naturally.
