The One Who Took the Crown
He never lost the crown. He just stopped needing it. First he sat on the throne and waited. Then he stood on the stairs, smoking, half ready to leave. Now he is gone, walking toward a red moon with nothing on his head. And she is here. She did not fight for it. She did not ask. She walked in, looked at the empty throne, and picked up the crown like it was always hers. The third chapter of the skeleton king. The end of his story, and the start of hers. Why I made this I have spent a lot of time with this skeleton king. First on his throne, then on the stairs, and both times I knew his story was not finished. A king who keeps holding on to his crown is not free. So I wanted to paint the moment he finally lets go. But a crown never stays empty for long. Someone always picks it up. I wanted that someone to be a person who does not care about thrones or the old rules, who laughs at kings and walks her own way. So I painted Ossen. She does not take the crown because she wants power. She takes it because nobody else had the nerve. This piece closes the story for me. Three paintings, one crown. The king who held it, the king who let it go, and the woman who took it.
