BEFORE HE LOOKS UP
The hand is already there. That’s the part nobody paints. We paint the rescue, the embrace, the moment two people finally hold on. But this is the moment before any of that. One man sits under a tree with his arms around his knees and his head down, the way you sit when you’ve stopped expecting anyone to come. The other has walked over, bent low, and opened his hand. And for now, that’s all. The hand is waiting in the air between them, and the one on the ground hasn’t seen it yet. Look at the man who’s standing. His shoulders are heavy too. His head hangs almost as low. He isn’t some hero who never broke. He’s someone who knows exactly what sitting there feels like, and that’s why he came. The bench behind them is empty. The lamp isn’t on. The red leaves keep falling like the world has no idea anything is happening. But above them the sky has started to open, pale and soft, as if the light already knows how this ends, even if he doesn’t. Nobody ever asks to be found. Someone just shows up, stands there, and doesn’t leave. Why I Made This: I’ve been the one on the ground. I know that posture. Knees pulled in, eyes on the dirt, telling myself I’m fine while hoping someone won’t notice and hoping someone will. And I know how rarely anyone actually walks over. But once, someone did. They didn’t give a speech. They didn’t try to fix anything. They just came close and held out their hand, and they waited. I didn’t take it right away. I couldn’t. But they kept it there. I painted the space between the two hands because that space is where everything changes. It’s where one person decides not to walk past, and the other has to decide whether he’s allowed to be helped. This is for the people who stayed when it would’ve been easier to leave. And for anyone still sitting under that tree: look up. Someone might already be there.
