The Aftermath
Summer 2026 was a year to remember in New York City. With an increase in events and outdoor activities that made the city denser and livelier than in previous summers, along with the World Cup games drawing visitors from around the world and bringing even more international attention to the city, it was easily a summer to remember. And it all started with the New York Knicks winning their first championship since 1973.
The Aftermath is a photograph of a celebration 53 years in the making.
Immediately after the final buzzer sounded at the end of Game 5 against the San Antonio Spurs, the city erupted with excitement and soon after, chaos. Tens of thousands of people spilled into the streets outside Madison Square Garden immersing themselves in a victory that would bring the city together.
As the night progressed, the celebration eventually made its way to Time Square, where crowds of restless people were met with barricaded streets and a dozen school buses transporting passengers to and from the World Cup games, now at a standstill. The massive crowd mostly dressed in NY Knicks jerseys and memorabilia had taken over the buses, the streets, and what felt like the entire world that night.
