First Light Last Light
Rays of Infinity
Mount Nemrut, one of Turkey’s highest mountains, is known for the colossal ancient statues of gods and kings crowning its summit.
I captured this photo during a photo tour to Mount Nemrut focused on Milky Way and nightscape photography. You can drive up to the lower slopes, but the final stretch to the summit is a steep hike on foot. Loaded with all my night photography gear, I started the climb. Halfway up, I paused for a break and looked west across the endless layers of mountains. The view instantly filled me with a sense of infinity.
Then I saw it, breathtaking rays of light bursting through the clouds, as if carefully placed there by a magic hand.
The cloud formation and the rays themselves almost mirrored the shape of the sun, while a rich orange glow spread beneath. The crepuscular rays appeared sharp and crystal clear.
I quickly pulled out my camera, knowing the scene could disappear in seconds as the sun slipped lower and golden light faded.
