"Keep a Light On" explores the universal human need for connection and belonging. The small ranch style Midwestern home, its windows glowing warmly against the night, serves as a focal point and metaphor. What does it mean to keep a light on for someone? Is it an act of love, of hope, or a silent promise of unwavering presence?
In creating this piece, I experimented with contrasts. The harsh glare of my rig's headlamps versus the soft interior light of the house. The wild, overgrown grass against the rigid lines of the home. These contrasts bring to mind the tension between being on the road and being at home. The guilt of missing important moments, the worry about not being there when you're needed. It's that nagging fear that something might go wrong while you're miles away, unable to help.
I used a simple flat oil brush to capture the texture of the overgrown grass, letting it spill beyond its boundaries. Does this untamed growth represent the way life continues at home, even when we're not there to tend to it? The rough, matte pavement stretching towards the house, a stark contrast to the lush grass. Does this symbolize the distance between us and our loved ones, a path we long to traverse? How do we balance our responsibilities on the road with the pull of home?
The night sky is a deep void, emphasizing the home's isolation. Yet the lit windows suggest life, warmth, someone waiting. How many of us have been on both sides of that equation - the one waiting up, and the one hoping someone waits for them?
"Keep a Light On" poses questions about our shared human experience. Who are we without our connections? What does it mean to belong somewhere, to someone? In a world that often feels dark and isolating, how do these small beacons of light anchor us?
This piece isn't just about a little ranch house in the mid-western night. It's about the universal longing for connection, the hope that someone out there cares enough to leave a light on. It's an exploration of how we signal our love and concern for others, and how we hope to receive those signals in return.
