‘Second Sight’ is inspired by Val Kilmer’s experience of visions of people and situations in distant locations. This is a theme that runs throughout his life story, and one example is found in chapter 2 of the book where he describes often ‘seeing’ his mother who lives in a different part of the country - what she is doing and how she is feeling - and calls her to confirm that the vision is accurate. Kilmer's spirituality surprised and fascinated me. As a nod to this, I have painted him in one of his most iconic roles: Iceman from Top Gun, but in the style of a religious icon with a halo around his head. Flying in the sky above, he is on a higher plane, able to see farther than those who are Earthbound. Like many saintly icons, his heart is outside his chest - representing divine love - another focus throughout his life. This heart has cartoon eyes, however, bringing a lighthearted feeling to the painting. Val Kilmer is a playful person, often with a sparkle in his eyes (he starred in one of my favorite comedies of all time, ‘Top Secret’). My impression, moreover, is that Val Kilmer is a person of profound spiritual feeling, as well as a playful artistic genius, and I have tried to capture this essence in my painting.
